My Journey in Fintech Design
The topic of money and numbers never interested me. If anything, I ran from it. But life has a way of leading us exactly where we need to be. After finishing my studies, an unexpected opportunity knocked—a chance to work at Personal Capital, a fintech startup that would redefine my perception of the financial world.
Joining as a contract graphic designer on a small but mighty design team marked the beginning of a transformative journey. The work was challenging, but undeniably exhilarating. I collaborated with exceptional individuals, each bringing unique perspectives that broadened my own. Understanding and interpreting their design needs became the cornerstone of my professional growth. The fast-paced environment allowed me to see the direct impact of my work—none more thrilling than the moment I drove down the 101 and saw a billboard I had designed come to life.
What once felt like an intimidating world of finance quickly turned into a fascinating challenge. As I delved deeper, I realized the power of wealth and financial literacy, and I saw my role as a designer in a new light. My mission became clear: to simplify complex financial concepts and push the boundaries of creative communication. Every project became an opportunity to refine ideas, enhance clarity, and contribute to a culture of design-driven transformation.
One lesson stood out above all: a product should sell itself through its value, and it’s the designer’s job to effectively communicate that message. This guiding principle has shaped my approach to design ever since, pushing me to rethink how we tell stories, engage audiences, and create meaningful experiences. What started as an unexpected detour turned into a defining chapter of my career—one that continues to shape how I see design, business, and the power of clear communication.
